Avoiding the Freshman 15

As I begin my second time around in school, now working toward my Masters degree, I may not be allowed to use the “freshman 15” excuse anymore.  However, healthy eating can be a challenge at any age.  While most studies negate that students gain the infamous 15 pounds, research shows that students do put on additional pounds throughout their college careers.  According to a recent study cited in WebMD Health News, nearly one in four freshmen gain at least 5% of their body weight, an average of about 10 pounds, during their first semester.  Why?  For me, I think there are a few factors that come into play.  Even though keg parties and dorm room pizza nights are a part of the past for me (thankfully), early morning classes, late night study sessions and erratic schedules all make it easy to fall prey to bad eating habits.  When I used to work full-time, I would generally eat breakfast and dinner at home and prepare a lunch to bring to work.  I felt in control of exactly how many calories I was eating.  Nowadays, with some morning classes and some night ones, I find myself stuck on campus and eating most of my meals out of the house.  The biggest challenge for me comes from countless study group meetings that convene at coffee shops and bakeries where sugary foods become all too tempting.  However, with a little planning, it’s actually quite easy to eat out and watch my diet.  For example, my peers from class love to study at Panera Bread.  Their food is so good, you would never believe they have lower calorie items.  However, when I checked out HealthyDiningFinder.com, I found a number of nutritious options, ranging from soup to sandwiches all under 650 calories!

So for students out there trying to avoid the “freshman 5, 10 or whatever,” here is my suggested meal itinerary:

Breakfast:

Panera Bread- Egg and Cheese Grilled Breakfast Sandwich

380 calories

Lunch:

Quiznos- Rasberry Chipotle Salad (special request no bread)

500 calories

Dinner:

Yard House- Thai Chicken Pizza (2 slices)

330 Calories
